Crocodile Tears for the Constitution

Crocodile Tears for the Constitution

“It does violence to the Constitution and the vision of our founders to appoint such a person in such a manner to be the chief legal officer in our country.”—Nancy Pelosi.

In the above quotation, Pelosi is referring to President Trump’s appointment of Matthew Whitaker to be the interim attorney general until a new one can be appointed. Her words are galling to anyone who truly reveres our Constitution, for the truth is that the majority of Democrats have absolutely no respect for the Constitution. Pelosi and her comrades do violence to our Constitution every minute of every day. Proof? Let me count the ways.

What is the position of the Democrats on illegal aliens? They support them. In fact, they encourage them to come by attacking President Trump and his efforts to stop the flow of illegals. Earlier this year, when a group of illegals entered the country, the law required that the children in the group be temporarily separated until their true parents could be identified. Did the Democrats support the law? Hardly. They ignored it and used the images of crying children to bludgeon President Trump as cruel and mean-spirited, even though he was following the Constitution in Article II, Section 3, which declares “[The President} shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” Sadly, this means nothing to the Democrats.

More recently, with a large caravan of illegals marching toward our southern border, have you heard one Democrat condemn such an invasion? Have you heard one Democrat insist that the southern border be defended from such onslaughts? Have you heard one Democrat urging Congress to build the wall? The answers are no, no, and no. Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution reads, “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion . . .” If the Democrats really love the Constitution, shouldn’t they be supporting the President in this matter?

And while we are on the subject of immigration, what is the position of the Democrats on sanctuary cities that protect illegal aliens from federal immigration officers? They support them, despite the fact that such cities are clearly violating immigration laws. Our Constitution contains a Supremacy Clause that declares that federal laws supersede state laws. If the Democrats have such a reverence for the Constitution, one would think that they would be appalled by the notion of a sanctuary city. But that’s not the case. I wonder what the Democrats would do if a city would declare itself a sanctuary for unborn children and, thus, ban abortion? I’m sure they would shout to the rooftops about the inviolability of the Supremacy Clause.

Another fundamental principle imbedded in the Constitution is the rule of law. In essence, the rule of law means that laws apply to everyone equally, regardless of one’s race, creed, position in society, etc. The Fifth Amendment reads, “no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process.” The Fourteenth Amendment reads, “No state shall deny to any person . . . the equal protection of the laws.” There can be no better example of the Democrats’ disregard for the rule of law than their treatment of Brett Kavanaugh. From the first moment Ms. Ford’s unsubstantiated accusation against Judge Kavanaugh was made public, nearly every Democrat publicly proclaimed that they believed Ms. Ford. When other unsubstantiated accusations came forward, they doubled down and declared that Kavanaugh was a serial rapist. Key foundations of the rule of law, such as the assumption of innocence until proven guilty or the right to confront one’s accusers or the need for evidence, were completely ignored. He was accused by a woman, and all women must be believed. If Kavanaugh’s life and reputation could be destroyed by ignoring the rule of law, then the Democrats were all on board.

And let’s not forget the First Amendment, particularly the right of freedom of religion. When the government tried to force the Sisters of the Poor to provide contraception coverage in their health plan, which would be a violation of the teachings of the Catholic Church, the Democrats sided with the government. When a baker refused to bake a cake for a “homosexual marriage” because it would violate his Christian beliefs, the Democrats called him a bigot and insisted that he be prosecuted to the furthest extent of the law. In other situations where the government has attempted to force people of faith to act in a manner that violates their conscience, the Democrats have turned their backs on them and the First Amendment.

Finally, we come to the Second Amendment. After every mass shooting, the Democrats run to the cameras to insist upon Draconian measures to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens. Some have even called for the elimination of the Second Amendment. A 2017 survey by The Economist andYouGov showed that more than a third of Democrats favor such a repeal. Also, 82% of Democrats would like to see all semi-automatic weapons, rifles and handguns, banned. And 50% of the Dems would also ban revolvers. Such bans would render the Second Amendment useless. So much for protecting the Constitution and the “vision of our founders.”

In 2013, when Nancy Pelosi was asked about abortion, she replied, “As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground for me . . .” I believe her. The killing of unborn children is sacred to her and her comrades. The Constitution? Not so much.
